We are the Queen City Jazz Band

from Denver, Colorado, USA and we play Dixieland Jazz, New Orleans Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Classic Jazz, Hot Jazz or whatever you call it.  For over sixty years the QCJB has been delighting audiences with the happy sounds of the 20s, 30s and 40s—Gospel, Early Jazz, Ragtime, Swing, Blues and Spirituals. We have performed at every major Dixieland/Swing jazz festival in North America. We faithfully recreate the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Scott Joplin, Bix Beiderbecke, Wilbur DeParis, Turk Murphy and many others. Our great singer, Wende Harston, brings to life the great hit songs of Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, Ethel Waters, Alberta Hunter, Helen Humes and many other early blues singers. Wende’s Gospel style is truly inspiring. Our concert performances never fail to delight listeners of all ages.  Our busy schedule abounds with weddings, worship and memorial services, educational clinics, fundraisers and major parties.  If the theme of your event is the Roaring Twenties, Mardi Gras, the Great Gatsby, Prohibition, the Jazz Age, Swing Dancing or Ragtime, we are the band for you.

R. I. P. Red Lehr

Our friend, the amazing tuba player Red Lehr, passed away on January 5th, 2021.  He was well known to Queen City Jazz Band fans who attended jazz festivals and to fans who may remember the Jazz Incredibles who were our guest years ago at Teikyo Loretto Heights theater.  Red played with Jeanie Kittrell and the St. Louis Rivermen at scores of jazz festivals in North America and Europe.  Google his name to read about his life and career.  Listen to his famous rendition of Tiger Rag on our music section below.  In our photo section there is a good shot of Red Carolyn, Susie and me.

You were a ray of sunshine to us as a fellow musician, Red.  As Alan Frederickson often said, "He has gone on to his reward which should be considerable."

QC University

I will always be a teacher at heart and now being retired I have decided to begin building some university level material for all of our friends.  QC University is in-depth information for you regarding past and present band members.  (Two so far.)

I taught jazz appreciation at CU Denver and rehearsed a trad jazz band.  Under the heading Jazz Appreciation you will find the sort of musical items I would call to the attention of my college students.  You may have never noticed some of these items that may significantly enhance listening. (One so far.)

Let me know what you think.

We Have Evolved

We celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2018.  In the past twelve years, we have added two new players and our band has evolved in two important ways.  First, we are playing to young adults who pack the dance floors jitterbugging and swing dancing to the music of Louis Jordan, Nellie Lutcher and other pop stars of the 40s and 50s.  Second, the QCJB has embraced old and new second-line styles from the streets of New Orleans.  The music of New Orleans musicians like Trombone Shorty, Tuba Skinny and Dr. John and bands like the Rebirth Brass Band and the Treme Brass Band have inspired us to discover new rhythms and melodies that are thrilling our concert and party audiences.  For our younger listeners these two additions to our repertoire are a link to the music of the past.  Our long-time fans can rest assured that our esteem for the legendary jazz styles of Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith will never diminish.  Celebrate the new and link to its roots!
